It's shameful that the Kinney family is effectively able to use the fact that other families have been getting pushed out for years to their own advantage, when their personal situation is not at all as they initially portray it. The attention should be going to the people who are being pushed out of the area and don't really have other good alternatives.
But when people are put on the defensive, individually or in this case as a community which is being eroded by outside home buyers, they become quicker to react without thinking and investigating the situation - in this case, it seems, to support a family that does not really deserve their support. And even if they realize that the story does not quite match the reality later on, they are already invested by that time, making them more likely to disregard actual evidence and less likely to back down. The longer it continues, the higher the chances that it becomes uncontrolled and someone gets hurt.
For this reason, I think the mayor's office is right to seek an end to this situation and in this manner. Yet, one asks oneself how it came this far. Taking a closer look at the family's background and investigating the merit of their story before supporting them could have helped with that.
