The Vinfast and the Furious
For an upstart Vietnamese carmaker, not all publicity is good publicity.
Chinese electric car companies are on the verge of coming to the United States, and they always will be. They’ve made inroads in much of the world, including Britain and Western Europe, but selling cars in the hypercompetitive American market is like going from college to the NFL.
You have to spend a fortune to meet U.S. safety standards, set up a dealer network, launch a media campaign, and then convince people to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a vehicle from an upstart company which you can’t guarantee will be around a year from now, much less a decade.
So, even the largest Chinese carmakers have taken their time and waited until their products, build quality and design are up to snuff before crossing the Pacific. A Vietnamese electric car company, on the other hand, has gone full Fyre Festival and decided to just do it and be legends, man.
