As for the cartoon: Netanyahu, as a major world leader overseeing a very controversial military campaign, is fair game for harsh criticism.
As was former Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir, who oversaw an actual genocide in Darfur. But if you’d drawn a political cartoon portraying al-Bashir as a monkey, you would have been playing into age-old stereotypes about Black people.
Just as this cartoon (which Montreal’s La Presse has removed from its website) conjures up portrayals of Jews as vampires. This could have appeared in Völkischer Beobachter without any reader thinking it was out of place.
