A realignment nobody saw coming
In 2023, conservatives team up with Muslims to fight suddenly assimaliationist progressives.
This weekend saw two notorious, megalomaniac tyrants turning their guns on each other, in a showdown which had most of us hoping and praying there was some way they could both lose.
Also, some shit happened in Russia or something.
An audio recording from a high school in Alberta made the social media rounds not too long ago, with a white teacher berating Muslim students about their refusal to follow traditional Canadian customs.
Just another day in Danielle Smith’s Alberta, of course. Let’s get some details about this extreme-right-wing bigot tormenting people of color because they won’t act “white,” but first let me take a big sip of this giant mug of cof-
In a particularly stark illustration of what appears to be a growing rift between Muslim communities and the Canadian public school system, an Edmonton teacher was allegedly caught on tape lambasting Muslim students for eschewing in-school Pride celebrations.
“You are out to lunch if you think it’s acceptable to not show up because … there’s Pride activities going on at school,” says the unnamed Londonderry School teacher in the two-minute recording, which appears to be directed against an individual student.
The teacher begins her dressing-down by saying there was no complaint from the non-Islamic student body when the Muslim holiday of Ramadan was recently acknowledged during “Lion Time,” a daily 20-minute session of orientation and news.
“It goes two ways!” she says. “If you want to be respected for who you are, if you don’t want to suffer prejudice for your religion, your colour of skin, your whatever, then you better give it back to people who are different than you.”
The teacher then references the recent passage of a bill in the African country of Uganda that prescribes capital punishment for what it deems “aggravated homosexuality”; homosexual acts committed against children or the disabled.
Consensual homosexual acts, which were already illegal in Uganda, are now punishable by life in prison.
“In Uganda, if they think you’re gay, they will execute you. If you believe that kind of thing, then you don’t belong here, because that is what Canada believes,” says the teacher. “We believe in freedom, we believe that people can marry whomever they want, that is in the law, and if you don’t think that should be the law, you can’t be Canadian.”
“You don’t belong here, and I mean it.”
There’s a lot to unpack here, including the teacher’s dictum that anyone who disagrees with same-sex marriage (which, for the record, I supported long before it became politically mainstream) is not just wrong or mistaken but unworthy of living in Canada.
I don’t know anything about the teacher and her personal life or sexual orientation. If she is herself gay, it’s understandable why she’d be put off by students showing such apparent disrespect, if not outright prejudice.
That said, I’m struck not just by the teacher’s pretty clear racism - Uganda is an overwhelmingly Christian country, but hey, these dark-colored people are all pretty much alike, right? - but also the transactional view of human rights and multiculturalism on display. Her team supported people from predominantly Islamic countries emigrating to Canada, so immigrants in turn owe them their support on key social issues, right?
Similarly, a municipal council in Michigan has banned the flying of Pride flags on city property. And once again, it's not some far-right podunk town but a suburb of Detroit with a large Muslim immigrant population. And left-wingers are saying they feel betrayed:
