If my writing style comes off like the Wish.com version of P.J. O’Rourke, there’s good reason for that. O’Rourke was a massive influence on the way I write and see the world, and his masterpiece is the 1988 compilation Holidays in Hell, about his visits to infamous trouble spots like war-torn Beirut, Communist Poland, and the Philippines during Ferdinand Marcos’ last days.
One destination in particular was a place so notorious that everyone who has set foot therein is still recovering from consciousness-shattering trauma:
Jim and Tammy Faye’s Christian theme park was a pretty big deal before it all came crumbling down. O’Rourke was there just as the the sex and financial scandals were starting to take their toll on the PTL empire, and he checked out the music store:
I never knew if that was real or if he made it up. And then, late last night, while scrolling through the /r/ObscureMedia subreddit, look what I found:
Yep, it’s real. And P.J. might not have appreciated it, but I think it’s kind of awesome.
The internet isn’t all bad, folks.
Guess I'll have to check out P.J. Always had a thing for finely tuned sarcasm, though clearly that wasn't the case for his subject matter in this case. ;)
