Others have denounced him for belatedly doing something he should have done long before, and only bowing to reality when the polling and fundraising numbers became too bad to ignore and his fellow Democrats’ jobs were at stake.

I agree wholeheartedly with both of these takes. Specifically, I agree with the “egomaniac who hung on way too long” position in absolute terms based on my moral code (never mind that I rarely live up to it), and “hero who did what was best for the country” position in relative terms compared to the alternative.
