Democrats do the right thing (after exhausting all of the alternatives)

Which still beats *never* doing the right thing.

Now that Joe Biden has formally announced his withdrawal from the 2024 Presidential election, some commentators have hailed him as an American hero for putting the best interests of the country first:

Others have denounced him for belatedly doing something he should have done long before, and only bowing to reality when the polling and fundraising numbers became too bad to ignore and his fellow Democrats’ jobs were at stake.

I agree wholeheartedly with both of these takes. Specifically, I agree with the “egomaniac who hung on way too long” position in absolute terms based on my moral code (never mind that I rarely live up to it), and “hero who did what was best for the country” position in relative terms compared to the alternative.
