Americans will be collateral damage in Trump's trade war.

With less than a week to Trump’s second inauguration, today’s Chronicle Herald (and its sister newspaper, the National Post) features this cartoon by Bruce MacKinnon:

Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Canadian imports, to be implemented on “national security” grounds once he takes office, will be devastating for Canada. Hence, the hapless beaver about to get crushed by President Ripper’s economic A-bomb.But the comic also illustrates the United States of America, illustrated by Uncle Sam, also getting crushed.

And that’s perfectly accurate, because Trump’s own constituents will be badly hurt by these tariffs even if Canada doesn’t retaliate. (And I assure you we will retaliate. Maybe. If history is any guide, today’s big meeting between Trudeau and the provincial premiers might end without them even being able to settle on a lunch menu.)
