While I was still in shock from the storming of the Capitol, I joined many others in comparing it to the September 11 attacks. This comparison was on full display when the first anniversary of the Beer Belly Putsch was commemorated yesterday, but I’ve dialed it back somewhat.
The symbolism of the Capitol being attacked, and the fact that it was instigated by the then-sitting President, can’t be understated. And five people - mostly among the rioters - lost their lives.
But we lost almost 3,000 people on 9/11. In America (and occasionally elsewhere) there are mass shootings every few months in which more than five people are killed. Even the strangely memory-holed truck rampage at the Waukesha Christmas parade a few weeks ago claimed a higher death toll than January 6.
So, I agree that some of the commemorations of January 6 might be overblown (though I credit President Biden for laying the blame where it truly belongs). The real concern is that worse might be to come.
